Recently I went through my makeup collection…I’m talking about hoards of makeup from roughly the past three years. This included every color in the rainbow of eye shadow, and a bunch of other things that I practically never actually use. I love organizing and streamlining things, I’m just one of those personalities that gets so much joy out of stuff like that! But besides cleaning up my vanity I have another big reason why I needed to go through my makeup…
All those toxins.
Not good for you!
I’ve known this for a while, but I could never seem to part with the years of acquired pallets and extensive amounts of blush, bronzer, and lipstick in every shade desirable. I wouldn’t usually wear a full face of makeup, so I justified wearing things that weren’t that great for my well being if I just did it on occasion.
When I got pregnant I really took a closer look at what I was using cosmetically, and what the ingredients were, and how they could affect my baby and I. I threw away all my fruity sugary lotions (that actually weren’t made from fruit, shocker…) and many of the hair sprays and other highly toxic things I used almost daily.
I replaced a lot of the lotions, creams, and body wash for essential oils, coconut oil, and other natural organic options. It’s actually so much easier this way! No need to constantly be buying a million different things when you can just get a jumbo size jar of coconut oil and literally use it for everything…homemade body scrub, hair masks, lotion, etc.
I put off that vanity full of makeup for a while …its quite a task to get rid of everything and start completely new! But, I am slowly but surely getting rid of my toxic beauty and replacing it with natural options. I’ve been discovering so many amazing items and brands that make natural beauty so easy to achieve.
So whether your pregnant, breastfeeding, or just someone who doesn’t want to load your skin with chemicals…then go through your cosmetics! Here’s a few tips to get started that have helped me…
- Start slow if you need to, I still have some non organic/natural brands of expensive eye shadows, and blushes that I didn’t feel quite ready to part with. The whole point is moving towards a more natural beauty routine, even if that takes a few months!
- Box things for the time being if it’s too hard to throw them away. Um, $50 Naked pallets anyone?
- Use the rest of what you have, and then buy organic when you run out. It can be hard to toss a favorite mascara or foundation if it’s 1/2 gone and still works great. But eventually all the “old” makeup will run out and this is when you should start incorporating healthier options.
- Opt for not wearing a full face of makeup daily. Being a mama I don’t have as much time to primp as I once did. I usually think of what my plans are for that day as I’m getting ready. If I’m just staying home then no reasons to get all made up! Also once you get used to using less, a little under eye concealer, lip stain, and some mascara will feel amazing!
I hope this is an easy list for you ladies who are interested in taking the plunge to go more natural!
Thanks for stopping by!
